Tony Pua Says He Expects To Be Charged Over Rukun Negara Facebook Post

Date:

Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said he is likely to be charged in court over a Facebook post related to the Rukun Negara after providing an additional statement to police at Bukit Aman on Monday.

Pua revealed that he was summoned for further questioning after the Attorney General’s Chambers returned the investigation papers to police for additional inquiries.

In a Facebook post, Pua said he is prepared to defend himself and stand by the views expressed in his post.

“I am fully prepared to defend my innocence, and more importantly, rigorously defend the spirit of the Rukun Negara and the sanctity of the Federal Constitution in a court of law,” he wrote.

Pua attended the session at approximately 11.30am accompanied by his lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, and described the interaction with investigators as professional, courteous and cordial.

According to Pua, the questioning lasted less than 30 minutes. However, he noted a significant change in his status during the investigation.

He said that while he had previously been interviewed as a witness, the latest statement was recorded with him classified as a suspect.

“So it appears that the balance of probabilities has shifted, where I’m likely to be charged in court within the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Pua added that most of the questions focused on the meaning of the word “decree” and other matters related to the Facebook post under investigation.

“My response was that the meaning of the post is as per what I wrote, but I’ll be happy to provide additional elaboration if required, in court,” he said.

The former lawmaker was previously called in by police following several reports lodged over the social media post, which touched on issues involving the Rukun Negara and the Federal Constitution.

In May, police confirmed that the case was being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which relates to statements conducive to public mischief, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 concerning the improper use of network facilities or services.

The investigation remains ongoing, with no formal charges announced at this stage.
