Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched his own branded website, TrumpRx, allowing users to purchase a variety of prescription medications at discounted prices, including drugs for weight loss and fertility treatments.
The move comes as part of Trump’s efforts to address voter frustration over rising living costs ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November, where his Republican Party risks losing control of Congress.
“Starting last night, dozens of the most commonly used prescription drugs will be available at significant discounts for all Americans,” Trump announced during an event at the White House. He criticised the high cost of medication in the U.S., claiming Americans effectively subsidise drug prices for the rest of the world.
Trump revealed that pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have agreed to offer their popular weight-loss GLP-1 medications at steep discounts on the site. Prices for Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic will drop from over US$1,000 (RM3,960) to US$199 (RM788) per month, while Eli Lilly’s Wegovy will be reduced from US$1,300 (RM5,148) to US$199. According to TrumpRx, these discounted rates will gradually increase after two months.
During the launch, an official brought a woman onto the stage as the first person to use TrumpRx to obtain affordable fertility treatment. Mehmet Oz, Trump’s Medicare and Medicaid administrator, joked, “We’ll have a lot of ‘Trump babies’ with these low costs.”
The website currently offers savings on more than 40 popular medications. Users can search for the drug they need, print a coupon, and present it at participating pharmacies to purchase at the discounted rate.
This initiative is seen as part of Trump’s broader strategy to tackle healthcare affordability concerns while energising his voter base ahead of the midterms.
