U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he believes the war with Iran could end soon, while acknowledging that the United States is facing shortages of certain types of military munitions.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump expressed confidence that the conflict would not continue much longer.
“I think it’s going to end pretty soon. I don’t think they can go much longer,” he said, referring to Iran.
His remarks come after reports that the U.S. military has significantly depleted its stockpile of long-range precision missiles during the five-month conflict.
When asked about the country’s weapons inventory, Trump said the United States still has a virtually unlimited supply of some powerful munitions but admitted that supplies of other weapons are becoming tighter.
He added that American defence manufacturers are expanding production by building new facilities to increase the output of key weapons, including Patriot air defence missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The comments come amid continued military operations and growing attention on the readiness of U.S. defence stockpiles as the conflict enters its fifth month.
