An opposition MP has sparked debate over Malaysia’s iconic Tugu Negara, questioning whether the monument’s soldiers truly represent the nation’s heroes. Speaking in Parliament during the committee-stage debate of Budget 2026 on Nov 6, Sabak Bernam MP Kalam Salan (PN) claimed that the soldiers’ facial features look “too European,” saying the main figure — the one holding the Jalur Gemilang — appears to have a pointed nose and Western facial traits.
Kalam questioned why a monument meant to honour Malaysians who fought for independence would depict features that “don’t look like Malaysians.” He argued that the 1966 monument could be misunderstood as glorifying colonial powers instead of celebrating local fighters.
“Why can’t the features look more Asian, more Malaysian? Malaysians don’t have noses that pointed,” he said, suggesting the statue be redesigned to better reflect the nation’s identity.
He added that a refreshed Tugu Negara would not only better represent Malaysia’s diverse people but also inspire stronger patriotism among younger generations.
