US Says China Wants Strait Of Hormuz Reopened Without Restrictions

Date:

The United States said Chinese officials had made it clear during the recent US-China summit that China wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened without restrictions, tolls or military control amid rising tensions involving Iran.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the matter was discussed during meetings between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

“It’s really important for China to have the Strait of Hormuz open, with no tolling and no military control, and that was clear from the meeting. So we welcome that,” Greer told Bloomberg Television during a live interview from Beijing.

He also said Washington believes Beijing is taking a pragmatic approach regarding its involvement with Iran and is unlikely to support actions that could escalate regional instability.

“With respect to Chinese involvement with Iran, our view is that the Chinese are being very pragmatic and they do not want to be on the wrong side of this,” he said.

Greer added that both China and the United States shared an interest in maintaining peace in the region.

“They want to see peace in that area. President Trump wants to see peace in that area. So we have a lot of confidence that they will do what they can to limit any kind of material support for Iran,” he added.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes, with global markets closely monitoring any developments that could disrupt oil supplies and international trade.
