Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he hopes former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be granted a royal pardon, stressing that the decision lies solely with the King.
Speaking at the opening of Makkal Sakti’s 17th annual general meeting on Saturday, Zahid said he and others could not bear to see the former Umno president remain in prison after three years of incarceration.
Zahid emphasised that the constitutional power to grant a pardon rests entirely with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, adding that the royal prerogative should not be questioned.
Najib is currently serving a jail sentence following his conviction in a corruption case.
