Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has unexpectedly found himself at the centre of an online debate after cameras captured him tearing off a tethered plastic bottle cap during France’s Bastille Day celebrations.
The brief moment, which took place on July 14 while Zelenskiy was seated among guests at the military parade, showed him struggling to unscrew a bottle of mineral water before eventually pulling the attached cap away from the bottle and taking a drink.
Although the incident drew little attention at the event itself, the clip quickly spread across social media, where it generated widespread discussion and became a trending topic in several countries.
The reaction centred on the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive, which requires plastic caps on single-use beverage containers of up to three litres to remain attached to bottles. The rule, which came into effect on July 3, 2024, aims to reduce plastic waste by ensuring bottle caps are collected and recycled together with the containers.
While Ukraine is not a member of the European Union, the country is currently pursuing EU membership after formally applying in 2022 and beginning accession negotiations in 2024. Because of this, some social media users jokingly linked the incident to Ukraine’s membership bid.
One widely shared joke claimed the bottle cap incident had “delayed Ukraine’s EU membership by 15 years”, while others used the moment to criticise the EU’s tethered-cap requirement, arguing that the design is inconvenient for consumers.
There is no indication that the incident has any impact on Ukraine’s EU accession process, and as of publication neither Zelenskiy nor the Ukrainian government has commented on the viral clip.
What began as a matter of seconds has nevertheless become an unlikely talking point online, turning an everyday action into the latest social media sensation.
