A suspected piece of space debris was discovered on Tuesday along the Tanjung Beach area of Kampung Nasai in Pekan, Pahang.
Pekan district police chief Mohamad Zaini said in a statement that the object was found by local residents at around 5pm and subsequently reported to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the object is believed to have fallen from space into the sea and was later carried by ocean currents to the Nasai coastline,” he said.
The fragment, estimated to measure approximately 4.26 metres by 3.64 metres, has been examined by officials from the Malaysian Nuclear Agency. Tests confirmed that the object contains no radioactive material.
For safety reasons, the debris has been temporarily stored at the Nasai police station while relevant authorities carry out further investigations. When visited by Bernama today, police had cordoned off the object with a security perimeter.
The fragment is said to weigh several hundred kilograms, with its surface covered in barnacles and showing signs of peeling and damage in some areas.
