A Final Dance For The GOATs: Messi And Ronaldo Chase World Cup Glory One Last Time

Date:

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are set to create another historic chapter in football as both legends prepare for what is expected to be their final FIFA World Cup appearance in North America next year, with each poised to become the first players ever to feature in six editions of the tournament.

More than two decades after their international debuts, the long-time rivals continue to define an era of global football, having evolved into sporting icons whose influence extends far beyond the pitch.

Messi, who guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022, once hinted that victory on football’s biggest stage could mark the end of his international journey. However, the 38-year-old has since extended his career, continuing to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer while still playing a key role for Argentina.

Despite stepping away from European football, Messi has maintained strong form on the international stage, helping Argentina secure the 2024 Copa America title and leading South American World Cup qualifying in scoring charts. He now approaches 200 international caps and remains a central figure in Lionel Scaloni’s squad.

The Argentina captain, who made his World Cup debut in 2006, is also closing in on Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 16 goals, having already netted 13 times in the competition.

On the other side, Ronaldo continues to push forward with Portugal at the age of 41, having previously led his nation to Euro 2016 success but still in search of World Cup glory. The Al Nassr forward remains the most-capped male international footballer in history and continues to feature prominently under coach Roberto Martinez.

Although Portugal suffered disappointment at Euro 2024, Ronaldo retains his place in the national setup and remains a key figure in their attacking structure as they head into the tournament as one of the contenders.

Ronaldo, who has scored eight World Cup goals so far, has indicated that the upcoming tournament will be his last, setting the stage for a possible final showdown at the highest level of international football.

Should both Argentina and Portugal progress through their groups as expected, football fans could witness a dream encounter between Messi and Ronaldo in the quarter-finals, a potential final meeting between two of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
