Badminton Legend Lee Chong Wei Awarded ‘Datuk Seri’ by Penang State

Date:

National badminton icon Lee Chong Wei has been conferred the prestigious Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), which carries the title “Datuk Seri”, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to sports. Speaking after the investiture ceremony during the 84th birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib at Dewan Sri Pinang in George Town on Wednesday (July 30), the Penang-born legend expressed gratitude for the honour.

“I received the Datukship in 2008, and now I’m thankful to be awarded the Datuk Seri title. I sincerely thank the state government and the people of Penang for always supporting me,” he said.

Lee, who held the world No.1 ranking in men’s singles for an impressive total of 349 weeks — including a 199-week consecutive reign from August 2008 to June 2012 — hopes to give back to the sport and his home state.

The three-time Olympic silver medalist retired from professional badminton in 2019 after a decorated 19-year career. His decision to step away from competition came after doctors advised him to avoid intense training due to health concerns following his battle with cancer.

In total, 1,530 individuals received various honours and awards during this year’s Penang state celebration. a126
