From SUKMA Champs to World Beaters: Malaysia’s 19-Year-Old Pair Claim Maiden International Crown

Date:

Malaysia’s young badminton duo, Muhammad Faiq Masawi and Lok Hong Quan, made history by clinching their first international title after winning the men’s doubles crown at the Petronas Malaysia International Series 2025 at the Educity Sports Complex in Johor on Sunday.

The 19-year-olds, who were also last year’s SUKMA champions, showed remarkable composure in the final, defeating South Korea’s Kim Jae-hyeon and Lee Sang-won in a thrilling three-set battle.

As the tournament’s top seeds, Faiq and Hong Quan started strong, securing the opening game 21-16. However, the sixth-seeded Korean pair fought back to level the score, taking the second game 21-19.

Determined not to let victory slip away, the Malaysians unleashed an aggressive style in the decider, powering through to a 21-14 win to seal their maiden international triumph.

Their victory also denied South Korea a clean sweep of all five titles, after their players had already dominated the other four finals.

In the mixed doubles all-Korean final, Kim Jae-yeon and Jang Eun-seo overcame compatriots Noh Jin-seong and Ye Na-lee 21-8, 21-18.

Women’s singles saw Kim Seong-min of Korea survive a tough test against Vietnam’s Bui Bich Phuong, eventually prevailing 21-18, 15-21, 21-14.

In the men’s singles, Park Sang-yong of Korea defeated Indonesia’s Christian Adinata in a marathon clash, 25-23, 20-22, 21-12.

Korea also claimed the women’s doubles title, with Jang Eun-seo and Kim Yu-jung beating Taiwan’s Hsuan Ni-chen and Hsieh Mi-yen 21-10, 21-17.
