Malaysia’s Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King celebrated their first title together after defeating fellow Malaysians Man Wei Chong and Soh Wooi Yik in the men’s doubles final of the Korea Masters at the Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium.
The newly formed “scratch pair” produced a composed performance to secure a straight-games victory, winning 21-13, 21-18 in the all-Malaysian showdown. The triumph marked their first title since being paired together.
The result also provided an early boost to the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) decision to reshuffle several of its men’s doubles combinations, despite the Korea Masters being a Super 300-level tournament.
Both pairs were familiar with each other’s strengths and weaknesses after regularly training together, making the final a closely watched contest between two scratch combinations.
The opening game remained competitive in the early stages, with both sides trading attacks and points. However, Kai Wun and Roy King began to pull away from 12-12 before closing out the first game 21-13.
They carried the momentum into the second game, taking control of the rallies and preventing Wei Chong and Wooi Yik from establishing a sustained comeback.
Although the latter pair attempted to narrow the gap, Kai Wun and Roy King maintained their composure and eventually sealed the second game 21-18 to lift the Korea Masters crown.
Their victory earned Kai Wun and Roy King US$19,750 (approximately RM80,779) in prize money along with their winners’ medals, while runners-up Wei Chong and Wooi Yik received US$9,500 (about RM38,855) and medals.
