The Malaysian men’s hockey team has been handed a challenging route in their bid to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt.
After a commanding 6-1 victory over Austria in their opening match on Sunday, the Speedy Tigers’ momentum faltered with a 3-5 defeat to Pakistan the following day. The loss has placed coach Sarjit Singh’s squad under pressure ahead of their final Group B match against China at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium tonight.
“We actually had a chance to win, but our own mistakes allowed Pakistan to score easy goals. What we need to focus on now is tightening our defence and minimising errors. There is no option but to beat China to secure a place in the top four,” Sarjit said.
China should not be underestimated, having previously defeated Malaysia 4-2 at the Asian Champions Trophy in Inner Mongolia and 3-2 in the 2024 Olympic Qualifiers in Muscat, Oman. However, Malaysia also holds two wins against China — 2-0 and 4-1 — in the Asia Cup in Bihar, India, last September.
Currently ranked 24th in the world and coached by Australian Anthony Farry, China has yet to produce a convincing performance in Ismailia. In their group, China narrowly lost 5-4 to Pakistan before drawing 1-1 against Austria.
Three of the best-performing teams from the qualifiers will earn automatic slots for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in Belgium and the Netherlands in August. Malaysia last competed in the World Cup in 2023 in Odisha, India, finishing 13th out of 15 teams.
