Malaysian Doubles Shuttlers Shine As Singles Players Exit Early At German Open

Date:

Malaysian shuttlers experienced a mix of results at the German Open, with doubles pairs advancing while most singles players exited early.

In men’s singles, Leong Jun Hao suffered a narrow defeat to Taiwan’s Chi Yu Jen 21-18, 5-21, 20-22, marking his second first-round exit in three tournaments this year. Fellow national player Justin Hoh also fell at the first hurdle, losing 17-21, 21-12, 8-21 to Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim.

The doubles teams, however, lifted Malaysia’s hopes. Men’s doubles pairs Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani all secured victories to advance to the second round. Malaysia is guaranteed at least one quarter-final spot, as Sze Fei-Izzuddin and Yew Sin-Ee Yi will face each other in the next round.

Mixed doubles pairs Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai and Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing also progressed comfortably to the last 16, defeating Dutch and Danish opponents.

In women’s singles, K Letshanaa lost in a tough match to Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki 9-21, 21-15, 11-21, while world No 41 Wong Ling Ching triumphed over India’s Tanvi Sharma 21-19, 17-21, 21-16, earning a spot in the second round.

The results highlighted Malaysia’s continued strength in doubles, even as singles players struggled to make a breakthrough in Mulheim.
