Preparations for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, including infrastructure and sports facility upgrades across the state, have reached about 80 per cent completion, Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi announced.
He said improvements are ongoing at sports facilities managed by local authorities and district-level councils. Two major venues currently undergoing comprehensive upgrades are the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre (PADE) in Section 13, Shah Alam, and the Subang Shooting Range.
“If we look at the aquatic centre, it was last used for SUKMA 1998, almost 30 years after it opened in 1997. This is a major upgrade, improving both facilities and technology. God willing, by April, we aim to have all sports facilities ready for SUKMA 2026,” he said during a press conference for the Symbolic Arrival Ceremony of the SUKMA 2026 Torch at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.
The torch, brought by SUKMA Secretariat CEO Datuk Mohd Yazid Saari, marks the start of the campaign to promote SUKMA 2026, which is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 24.
As part of the promotional tour, the SUKMA 2026 torch will visit all nine districts in Selangor, highlighting the state’s role as host of the 22nd edition of the biennial games. The torch was previously handed over to Selangor in Kuching, Sarawak, host of the 2024 edition.
This year’s SUKMA will feature 474 events across 37 sports, while the SUKMA 2026 Paralympics, scheduled from September 5 to 14, will showcase 10 sports.
