Sukma 2026 To Proceed In August But Scaled Down Amid Global Energy Crisis

Date:

The 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) will go ahead as scheduled from August 15 to 24, but with a scaled-down format following concerns over the global energy crisis and its wider economic impact.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari said the decision was made during a meeting of the Sukma Supreme Committee, which includes Olympic Council of Malaysia president Norza Zakaria and Selangor state executive councillor for sports Najwan Halimi.

Dr Taufiq, who chairs the committee, said several factors were taken into consideration, including the preparations already made by participating athletes ahead of the Games.

He also noted that postponing the 2026 Sukma could result in financial consequences for the host organiser, the Selangor state government.

Despite the cost-cutting measures, he confirmed that the number of sports events will remain unchanged, with adjustments focusing on reducing overall expenditure.

He added that the decision aims to ensure the Games proceed smoothly while balancing economic realities and maintaining athlete readiness.
