Toh Ee Wei Pleads For Unity, Urges Malaysians To Stop Personal Attacks On Athletes

Date:

National mixed doubles ace Toh Ee Wei has called on Malaysians to stand together and back their athletes, urging the public to draw a clear line between constructive criticism and personal attacks.

Speaking to reporters after a training session, Toh said shuttlers are prepared to accept feedback on their performances, but online abuse and personal insults — especially those aimed at family members — are deeply hurtful and unwarranted.

“As Malaysians, we must remain united,” she said, stressing that representing the country comes with immense pride, responsibility and pressure. “Winning and losing are part of sport, but what matters most is our attitude and the fight we show for every point.”

The 25-year-old acknowledged that criticism is a natural part of elite sport and can even help athletes improve. However, she said the tone and intent behind comments matter greatly, particularly in the age of social media.

“Criticism is normal. Without it, we can’t get better. But when it turns into insults, that’s where it becomes frightening,” she said, adding that negativity can take a heavy emotional toll on athletes.

Toh revealed that during a difficult spell earlier in her partnership with Chen Tang Jie, personal attacks were even directed at her parents following a string of below-par results. Such experiences, she said, were painful but also taught her the importance of mental resilience.

The pair have since answered their critics in emphatic fashion. As reigning 2025 world mixed doubles champions, Toh and Chen regained momentum by capturing the Indonesia Masters title in Jakarta last month, where they edged Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in a gripping final.

Despite the challenges, Toh expressed heartfelt appreciation for fans who continue to offer encouragement through both victories and setbacks. She said that unwavering support remains a powerful motivator as she and her teammates continue their pursuit of success on the international stage, reminding Malaysians that unity behind their athletes can make a decisive difference.
