Epic Games To Cut Over 1,000 Jobs Following Slump In Fortnite Engagement

Date:

In a significant move reflecting the ongoing instability within the global gaming industry, Epic Games announced on Tuesday its plan to cut more than 1,000 jobs. The decision comes as the developer’s flagship title, Fortnite, experienced a notable drop in player engagement, forcing the company to reassess its operational costs. This latest round of layoffs highlights a broader trend in the video game sector, where growth has stalled significantly amidst global economic uncertainty and shifting consumer habits.

Chief Executive Tim Sweeney addressed the staff in a formal note, explaining that these reductions are essential to placing the company in a more stable financial position. Alongside the workforce reduction, Epic Games aims to achieve over US$500 million in savings through various measures, including reduced spending on external contracting and marketing, as well as leaving several currently vacant roles unfilled. Sweeney admitted that the company has faced internal challenges in maintaining the “consistent magic” that originally propelled Fortnite to global stardom.

The gaming industry at large is currently grappling with a period of weaker growth as consumers increasingly gravitate towards established, proven titles rather than new ventures. Even live-service games, which traditionally rely on a continuous stream of fresh content to maintain their player base, are beginning to show signs of structural fatigue. Sweeney described the current market conditions as the “most extreme” the company has encountered since its inception in 1991, noting that the industry-wide slowdown has hit even the most successful developers.

Addressing growing concerns within the creative community, Sweeney explicitly stated that these layoffs are not related to the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This clarification comes at a time when many developers fear that generative technology might eventually replace human roles in game design and coding. This move marks the second major restructuring for Epic Games in three years, following a previous round in September 2023 where approximately 830 employees, or 16 per cent of its workforce, were let go.

The announcement from Epic Games follows a series of similar retrenchments across the sector, including significant staff cuts at Electronic Arts and Amazon’s gaming division late last year. As major players like Sony and Apple also face various legal and market pressures, the industry appears to be entering a phase of consolidation and rigorous cost-cutting. While the exact percentage of the total workforce affected by this Tuesday’s announcement remains unclear, the scale of the cuts signals a major shift in the company’s long-term growth strategy.
