Apple Watch users will not have to worry about mandatory user-replaceable batteries anytime soon after the European Union confirmed that wearable devices will be exempt from its upcoming battery replacement regulations.
The new EU rules, which are set to take effect in February 2027, will require many electronic devices sold in the region to feature batteries that users can replace themselves.
However, the exemption applies to wearable devices, including smartwatches, fitness trackers and smart glasses, meaning products such as the Apple Watch will not be affected by the legislation.
Not all portable electronics will receive the same exemption. The Nintendo Switch 2 will still be required to comply with the new regulations and must feature a user-replaceable battery for units sold in the European Union once the law comes into force.
The new rules are part of the EU’s broader effort to improve product repairability, reduce electronic waste and extend the lifespan of consumer electronics.
