Lucid, Uber and Nuro Unveil Futuristic Robotaxi Ready for U.S. Roads

Date:

Lucid Group (LCID.O), Nuro, and Uber (UBER.N) on Monday unveiled a production-ready robotaxi, marking a major milestone for their autonomous vehicle partnership. The reveal at CES in Las Vegas positions the trio alongside companies such as Alphabet’s Waymo and Elon Musk’s Tesla in the race to deploy large-scale robotaxi services in the U.S.

The companies said on-road testing began in December, led by Nuro using engineering prototypes monitored by safety operators. The testing combines real-world driving, closed-course trials, and simulation to ensure safety ahead of a planned robotaxi launch in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year. Production is expected to start at Lucid’s Arizona factory once final validation is complete.

Uber, which sold its self-driving unit to Aurora Innovation in 2020, is now partnering with multiple autonomous vehicle developers to bring robotaxis onto its app rather than owning the technology. For Lucid, the project represents a diversification beyond consumer electric vehicles, as the luxury EV maker faces slowing U.S. demand, high cash burn, and increasing competition. The company reported 2025 deliveries slightly above estimates, although production continues to outpace sales.

The robotaxi is based on Lucid’s Gravity electric SUV and features a roof-mounted sensor “halo” integrating cameras, lidar, and radar for full 360-degree perception. Uber designed the interior, including interactive screens that allow riders to control climate, seating, and entertainment, and to contact support if needed. The vehicle is powered by Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous system, capable of operating without human intervention under defined conditions, and runs on Nvidia’s DRIVE AGX Thor computing platform.
