OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Sora, and API Crash Again, Frustrating Users Worldwide

Date:

OpenAI is grappling with another significant global outage, the second this month, affecting its flagship services—ChatGPT, Sora, and the GPT API. Users worldwide, from North America to Asia, including Malaysia, have reported widespread issues starting around 08:40 AM MYT, as tracked by outage monitoring platform DownDetector.

The disruptions have sparked frustration across social media, with users citing login failures, lost chat histories, and server overload errors. This latest incident raises fresh concerns about the reliability of OpenAI’s infrastructure as demand for its AI tools skyrockets.

Widespread Impact Across Services

DownDetector reports that 85% of users are unable to access ChatGPT, with many encountering an “unexpected error” message when attempting to start new conversations or retrieve past chats. The GPT API, critical for developers, is plagued by errors, causing delays and incomplete outputs. Sora, OpenAI’s video generation tool, is also hit hard, with creators reporting abrupt session terminations and lost work.

Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding assistant, is similarly affected, with developers facing sluggish performance and unreliable results. Of the reported issues, 80% are linked to ChatGPT access, 10% to website downtime, and 10% to mobile app crashes or failures.

Growing Concerns Over Reliability

This outage follows a similar disruption earlier in July, prompting questions about OpenAI’s ability to scale its infrastructure to meet growing global demand. As businesses, developers, and creators increasingly rely on these tools, the recurring outages highlight potential vulnerabilities in OpenAI’s systems.
