Two Malay men who attempted to steal cables from a warehouse in Kuantan were brought before the Magistrate’s Court today, with one pleading guilty and receiving a jail sentence, while the other claimed trial and was granted bail.
The accused, 43-year-old Khairi Changgansa (a self-employed man from Felda Sungai Tengkek 5) and 42-year-old Mohamad Sukri (a labourer from Felda Sungai Tengkek), were charged with breaking into a warehouse at a chemical factory in the Gebeng Industrial Zone at around 11pm on July 15 to steal cables worth about RM800.
They were charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking with intent to steal, read together with Section 34. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in jail, with a possible fine or whipping for repeat offenders.
Khairi pleaded guilty before Magistrate Fairuzina Osman and appealed for a lenient sentence, citing his RM1,400 monthly income, a wife who is a housewife, and the responsibility of supporting three school-going children. The court sentenced him to 1 year and 3 months in prison.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Sukri pleaded not guilty and requested to be released on bail, stating he earns RM2,000 monthly and has two children with his wife. The court granted him bail of RM4,000 with one surety. His case will be mentioned again on August 20.
