Police have arrested an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman in connection with the discovery of a newborn baby girl abandoned at a surau car park in Taman Universiti, Skudai.
Johor Bahru Utara police chief Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said both suspects were picked up at about 2.15am on Monday to assist investigations into the case, which has shocked the local community.
He said initial checks showed that neither individual had a prior criminal record, and both also tested negative for drugs during screening.
The duo will be brought to court for a remand application as investigations continue, he added.
Police are investigating the case under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which covers the exposure and abandonment of a child under the age of 12 by a parent or guardian.
The newborn girl was previously found wrapped in a towel with her umbilical cord still attached, before being rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the baby is now in stable condition and receiving further medical care.
The discovery came after a social media post on Threads went viral, claiming a family member had found the infant at the location, prompting widespread public concern and online discussion.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and have urged the public to avoid speculation as the case develops.
