Malaysian singer-songwriter Namewee has come under fire from Taiwanese model Sprite Fang following his recent social media post seeking part-time employment.
Sprite Fang, 42, who was a close friend of the late Iris Hsieh, voiced her displeasure on Facebook on Wednesday, stating that Namewee’s post was inappropriate while the investigation into Iris’ death is still ongoing.
“You don’t have money, but at least you still have your life. You can continue writing music to earn an income. Iris had money but is no longer alive to spend it,” she wrote.
She urged Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, to take responsibility and show greater sincerity. “Can you pay your respects to Iris with sincerity? Death itself isn’t frightening. What’s frightening is being forgotten,” she added.
Her remarks came just two days after Namewee revealed on social media that all his engagements had been cancelled until the end of 2026 due to his association with Iris’ death. He also mentioned that his sponsor for his upcoming Chinese New Year song had withdrawn.
Namewee was released on bail on November 12 after Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd. Dusuki Mokhtar stated there was no evidence linking him to Iris’ death, though investigations are still in progress.
Following his release, Namewee said he did everything he could to help Iris but was ultimately unable to save her.
