Malaysian Tourist Refuses Flood Rescue, Says “It’s Not Check-Out Time Yet”

Date:

As floodwaters continue to rise across Hatyai, southern Thailand, a Malaysian tourist sparked disbelief after refusing evacuation from a hotel, claiming it was not yet “check-out time.”

The incident was shared by Malaysian road-trip enthusiast Alez Ander, who has been assisting stranded Malaysians by relaying their locations to local rescue teams. Alez clarified that he is not officially part of any rescue operations but helps coordinate assistance when victims reach out for help.

According to Alez, several Malaysians contacted him after being trapped by the worsening floods. He successfully arranged for a rescue boat to reach one of the affected hotels. Battling strong currents, the rescue team eventually arrived—only to be met with an unexpected response from one guest.

“I can’t leave… My check-out is tomorrow,” the tourist reportedly told rescuers, insisting on remaining in the room despite the rising water levels. Shocked, the rescue team had no choice but to redirect their efforts to other guests in immediate danger.

Alez described the encounter as “a perfect example of the saying, ‘It takes all kinds of people to make the world,’” highlighting the tourist’s unusual priorities amid a life-threatening situation.

He also praised the dedication of Hatyai’s frontline rescuers, sharing that one worker had gone more than 40 hours without sleep while helping flood victims. “I told her: You’ve already done your best. You are a hero,” Alez said.

Even though the rain has subsided, floodwaters continue to rise as runoff from nearby mountains flows into the city. Alez urged all those affected to stay safe during this challenging period.
