QR-Enabled MyKad to Launch June 1 to Strengthen Identity Security

Date:

The next-generation MyKad will incorporate a QR code to enable authorities to verify the authenticity of identity cards, Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced in the Dewan Rakyat today. The upgraded version is scheduled to be introduced on June 1 next year.

He said the QR code feature is designed to curb forgery and misuse of MyKad while aligning with modern security standards.

“The government has approved a new contract for the supply of the MyKad, MyTentera and MyPoca cards,” he said. “One of the upgraded security features is a MyKad QR code, which serves as a digital confirmation that the identity card is genuine.”

Shamsul noted that the National Registration Department will continue to process requests to amend personal details, subject to the nature of the changes.

He also said his ministry will review a request from Willie Mongin (GPS–Puncak Borneo) to include Bumiputera status and religious affiliation on the upcoming MyKad.

Earlier, Willie referred to an incident in which a Sarawakian Bumiputera woman was allegedly humiliated by a bank employee who publicly questioned whether she was Muslim. He added that non-Muslim residents of Sabah and Sarawak often face challenges eating in public during Ramadan due to assumptions that they are Malay Muslims.
