SMC Removes 936 Stray Dogs as Public Safety Concerns Rise

Date:

The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has removed a total of 936 stray dogs from streets under its jurisdiction as of October, authorities confirmed.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting highlighted complaints about stray dogs in areas including Rantau Panjang, Taman Indah, and Kampong Bahagia Jaya. “Our enforcement team will continue to capture strays that pose a threat to public safety,” he said during the full council meeting on Wednesday.

Of the total, 122 dogs were removed last month—the highest monthly figure in recent months. July and August also saw significant captures, with 108 and 110 dogs caught, respectively.

Ting also reported that SMC recorded 670 dog bite cases over the past 10 months, including 183 caused by strays and 487 by pet dogs.

In addition, Ting reminded personnel involved in resource management to familiarise themselves with their roles following the passing of the Sustainable Resources and Waste Management Bill (SRWMA) 2025 at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. He emphasised that the legislation is a comprehensive plan extending beyond simple waste separation.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the Bill aims to strengthen environmental governance and accelerate Sarawak’s transition toward a circular, renewable-energy-driven economy. Clause 3 designates SRWMA as the central body responsible for regulating, coordinating, and promoting sustainable resource use and waste management across the state, including segregation, collection, treatment, recycling, disposal, project approvals, and compliance oversight.

Finally, Ting advised residents to contact the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) if they discover beehives on their property, rather than hiring private operators, noting that Bomba typically responds after 6pm when bees are less active.
