6.5-Magnitude Quake Hits Near Northern Sumatra, Tremors Felt in Malaysia

A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 12.56pm yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported.

The quake’s epicentre was located at latitude 2.7° north and longitude 95.9° east, at a depth of 57 kilometres.

Mild tremors were felt across several west coast states in Peninsular Malaysia. However, MetMalaysia confirmed that the earthquake does not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia.
