Warisan Not Seeking Peninsular Expansion for Chinese Support

Date:

Warisan deputy information chief Justin Wong has dismissed claims that the party plans to expand into Peninsular Malaysia in an effort to strengthen support among the Chinese community.

The Sri Tanjong assemblyman said Warisan’s focus remains on fulfilling its responsibilities within Sabah and serving the people.

“Warisan is the only stand-alone local party with the highest number of assemblymen in the state,” he said. “We have 25 assemblymen, including nine Chinese representatives, and we will continue to play an active role as the opposition to provide checks and balances and prevent any abuse of power.”

Commenting on the formation of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Plus Cabinet, Justin said the inclusion of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) showed that GRS could no longer claim to be a purely local coalition.

“Whether in urban, rural or semi-urban areas, the people have expressed strong support for local parties,” he said. “Yet, as in the previous term, GRS campaigned as a ‘local party’ but immediately joined forces with PH and BN after securing the mandate.”

“This clearly shows GRS does not practise what it preaches.”

Justin also said Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had previously pledged to appoint a Chinese elected representative as deputy chief minister, with a candidate already chosen.

“However, after the election, that promise was not fulfilled. Such actions make the public question a leader’s credibility and integrity,” he said.
