“A Disgrace”: Sultan of Selangor Slams MPs Over Shouting Matches in Dewan Rakyat

Date:

The Sultan of Selangor has urged Members of Parliament to conduct themselves with respect, dignity and integrity, expressing deep disappointment over repeated instances of rowdy behaviour in the Dewan Rakyat.

In an interview with Bernama, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah criticised certain MPs who continue to engage in shouting matches and disruptive conduct despite repeated reminders.

“It’s a disgrace. Some MPs remain rowdy even after numerous calls for better behaviour,” he said, adding that lawmakers should be role models for the younger generation instead of acting “like bullies.”

Parliament has seen several heated incidents this year, including the ejection of two MPs last month following a verbal clash and multiple sessions marred by chaos as tempers flared.

Sultan Sharafuddin stressed that the Dewan Rakyat must embody mature democratic discourse.

“MPs should debate intelligently and offer constructive ideas. There is no need for abuse or insults. Such immaturity only erodes public trust in the institution,” he said.

While emphasising that he has no intention of interfering in parliamentary proceedings — which are under the Speaker’s purview — the Ruler said he felt compelled to speak up because the behaviour of MPs reflects on national leadership and influences public perception.

He urged lawmakers to uphold decorum, engage in civil debate and resolve disagreements through reason and persuasion.
