Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged social activists to continue raising their voices to foster positive change in Malaysia’s development.
Speaking at the launch of the book “The Man Who Could Move Mountains: Reflections on the Social Activism of SM Mohamed Idris” at the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar stressed that social activism plays a crucial role in building a fair and compassionate nation without leaving anyone behind.
“However, activism must be conducted wisely. It should not involve spreading hatred, cynicism, or ridiculing others. That is wrong,” he said.
Anwar emphasized that social activism is distinct from taking hard political stances. It is about the individual’s ability to contribute meaningfully to societal change. He cited SM Mohamed Idris, former president of the Penang Consumers Association (CAP), as an exemplary figure who fought tirelessly for consumer rights, social justice, and environmental causes.
“Uncle Idris does not engage in hard politics. His style is simple, yet his views on the state, the country, and justice are firm. He smiles, treats everyone kindly, but never compromises on key principles. This is the model of courage, dedication, and simplicity that we need,” Anwar said.
Also present at the event were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul, IAIS chairperson Maszlee Malik, and Bernama chairperson Wong Chun Wai.
