Card Shop Suspends Yu-Gi-Oh Tournaments Over Players’ Poor Hygiene

Date:

An independent card shop in the United States has temporarily suspended its Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments after receiving repeated complaints about players’ poor hygiene and the condition of its facilities.

According to IGN, Chronos Games & Gifts in Beaverton, Oregon, announced that it would pause all Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments for one week following ongoing issues involving customers arriving in an unclean condition and allegedly mistreating the venue’s restrooms.

In a statement shared on its public Discord channel, the shop reminded players that they are expected to follow Konami’s official tournament guidelines, which include hygiene standards. The store also encouraged attendees to report anyone who fails to comply with the rules.

Konami introduced formal hygiene requirements for organised tournaments in 2019, stating that all participants and spectators must arrive clean and wear clean clothing. Under the company’s Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament Guide, players who fail to meet the standards may face penalties or be asked to address the issue before being allowed to continue competing.

The guidance notes that poor personal hygiene can create an uncomfortable environment, particularly during lengthy tournaments where players gather in close proximity for several hours.

The Oregon shop’s decision has been welcomed by many local players, who said maintaining a clean and pleasant environment benefits everyone attending organised events.

Similar reminders have also appeared in other trading card game communities. Earlier this year, the Nebraska Pokémon Organized Play community reiterated hygiene expectations contained in the official Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook, which allows organisers to ask participants to improve their hygiene or clothing and remove those who refuse to comply.

The incident has since attracted widespread attention online, reigniting discussions about cleanliness and etiquette within competitive trading card game communities as organisers continue to emphasise that basic personal hygiene is an important part of creating an enjoyable experience for all players.
