Sticky Situation: 11 Barrels of Malt Syrup Cause Motorbike Crash

Date:

In Shoufeng Township, Hualien, a truck carrying 11 barrels of malt syrup lost its load after the barrels were not properly secured, spilling syrup across the road and creating a sticky hazard. Two motorcyclists slipped on the syrup and were injured, suffering multiple abrasions. The truck driver faces fines ranging from NT$3,000 to NT$18,000.

The incident occurred on a winding road along Highway 11 around noon on the 16th. Motorcyclists were slowing down to navigate a curve when they suddenly encountered a large patch of liquid on the road. At first glance, it looked like water, but it was thick and sticky, covering roughly 100 meters.

One of the riders said, “I slowed down, but I couldn’t see it on the road. We tried to stay to the side, but there was nothing we could do.” Both motorcycles were left with visible skid marks, and their exhaust pipes were scraped.

Police arrived promptly, found the injured riders, and confirmed they had multiple abrasions but no life-threatening injuries. Traffic cones were set up to divert vehicles safely.

The Highway Bureau later arrived with shovels to remove the syrup and used high-pressure water to wash the road. Sand was spread to improve traction and prevent further accidents.

Authorities emphasized that the truck driver is responsible for ensuring the load is secured. In addition to covering the riders’ medical expenses, the driver may face legal penalties of up to NT$18,000. Officials stressed the importance of properly securing large loads to avoid similar incidents in the future.
