Two people sustained minor injuries after a large tree with a circumference of about two metres collapsed onto a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a motorcycle along Jalan Penang today.
The incident involved a 17-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl who were riding a motorcycle when the tree suddenly fell across the road.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at 7.18pm.
Eight firefighters from the Jalan Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Station, led by operations commander Mohamad Kasim Kadir Maidin, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Initial investigations found that the fallen tree struck a parked Toyota Hilux and a Yamaha LC motorcycle. The two motorcyclists suffered minor injuries and received immediate treatment at the scene, while the 64-year-old owner of the Toyota Hilux was not injured,” he said in a statement.
Firefighters, assisted by the Penang City Council (MBPP) and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), worked to cut and remove the fallen tree.
Several nearby roads were affected by traffic congestion following the incident. The injured victims were later handed over to the Ministry of Health team, while MBPP carried out further follow-up actions.
The operation concluded at 7.57pm.
