Illegal settlements built without approval from the relevant authorities must be demolished in accordance with existing laws, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said.
He stressed that the issue was not a new one and should be addressed properly through established legal procedures.
According to Amirudin, any settlement developed without approval from local authorities or the District and Land Office is subject to enforcement action, including demolition.
“Based on records, various actions such as warnings and notices would have been issued. In most land-related cases, the issue involves land being used beyond its approved purpose or conditions.
“We have dealt with many similar cases before, including illegal dumping sites under the state government’s jurisdiction. Before any seizure is carried out, sufficient time must be given to landowners to restore the land,” he told reporters on Friday.
His remarks came following reports regarding a four-storey apartment building in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, Hulu Langat, which had previously been used as a settlement by members of the Rohingya community.
Earlier, Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the building had been fully handed over to the Selangor state government for further action.
She explained that the property did not fall under strata management and was therefore outside the ministry’s jurisdiction.
Commenting further, Amirudin said he had received assurances from the Hulu Langat District Officer that immediate action would be taken, including demolition works and, if necessary, land seizure proceedings.
“The issue involves urban planning regulations and compliance with land-use conditions, which must be properly managed. However, I have been assured that swift action will be taken to demolish the structure.
“As for land seizure, the process is not straightforward because ownership rights are involved and premiums have been paid. Therefore, due process must be followed, and in some cases, matters may need to be resolved through the courts,” he said.
The state government is expected to proceed with enforcement measures in accordance with legal requirements and established procedures.
