Ambulance Runs Red Light, Crashes At KL Junction, Seven Injured

Date:

An ambulance collided with a car while passing through a traffic light junction, leaving seven people injured in an accident in Kuala Lumpur on Monday morning.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zain Zuri said the crash occurred at about 8.10am along Jalan 6, Setapak Industrial Area, and involved two cars and four motorcycles.

Preliminary investigations found that a car travelling straight from the Wangsa Maju direction entered the junction on a green light. At the same time, an ambulance coming from Jalan Kilang entered the junction against a red light with its emergency siren and warning lights activated, before colliding with the car.

“Based on a video of the incident circulating on social media, it has been confirmed that the ambulance’s siren and warning lights were switched on. However, the ambulance driver still has a responsibility to slow down when approaching and entering a traffic light junction. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Following the initial impact, the ambulance lost control and crashed into several motorcycles that were waiting at the junction, as well as another car.

A 40-year-old male motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, including a fractured right femur. The remaining victims — comprising the ambulance driver and crew, four male motorcyclists and a nine-year-old girl — sustained minor injuries such as abrasions and body pain.

“All the injured victims were taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment,” he said.

Mohd Zain Zuri added that the ambulance was not carrying any patient at the time and was en route to a public housing area in Gombak Setia to pick up a patient.

Two of the motorcyclists involved have yet to lodge police reports as they are still receiving medical treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Police have urged witnesses to come forward to assist investigations by contacting the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or the nearest police station.
