Date:

A charred body was discovered after a fire destroyed approximately 30 squatter houses in Sangan town, Tatau, Bintulu Division, late last night.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the identity of the victim has yet to be confirmed.

An emergency call was received at 11.18pm, prompting the deployment of seven personnel from the Tatau Fire and Rescue Station.

“Upon arrival, the operations commander reported that the blaze had engulfed about 30 squatter houses near Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sangan Iban, all of which were completely destroyed,” the spokesperson said in a statement today.

The affected settlement is located across a river with no road access. Firefighters relied on boats provided by villagers to transport equipment to the site.

The charred body was discovered at 2.36am, and efforts are ongoing to identify the victim.

“Operations personnel are also in the process of determining the exact number of residents who lived in the squatter settlement,” the spokesperson added.
