Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the High Court verdict in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case represents the agency fulfilling its duty to the nation, rather than a moment for celebration.
“For the MACC, this decision is neither a moment of celebration nor personal pride. It reflects the fulfilment of our responsibility and duty to the nation, carried out in accordance with the trust and mandate entrusted to us,” Azam said in a statement today.
He emphasised that MACC’s role remains to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour, guided solely by facts, evidence, and public interest.
Azam extended his congratulations to the MACC investigating officers and prosecution team who worked on the 1MDB investigation from its inception in July 2015 until the court’s decision was delivered.
“This expression of appreciation recognises the extraordinary commitment and perseverance of our officers, particularly in securing evidence both domestically and internationally,” he said.
He noted that the investigation faced significant legal, technical, and jurisdictional challenges, but the team remained steadfast in ensuring that the case met the rigorous legal standards required for prosecution.
Azam also acknowledged the support of agencies that cooperated throughout the investigation, including Bank Negara Malaysia and the Royal Malaysia Police. He further praised the professionalism of foreign counterparts, highlighting the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department, the United Kingdom’s International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre, Switzerland’s Attorney-General’s Office, Singapore’s Commercial Affairs Department, and authorities in the Netherlands and Barbados.
“Their professionalism and unwavering commitment to cross-border cooperation are deeply appreciated,” he said.
Earlier today, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was found guilty on all four charges of abuse of power involving the misappropriation of RM2.3 billion from 1MDB. Federal Court judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who presided over the trial at the High Court, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
