No Apology, No Cooperation: Puchong Umno Severs Local Ties With Harapan Over Yeo Bee Yin Remarks on Najib

Date:

Puchong Umno has announced the termination of its cooperation with Puchong Harapan after Selangor MP Yeo Bee Yin failed to apologise for and retract her remarks against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Puchong Umno secretary Yusof Yassin said the decision was made after the division issued Yeo a 24-hour ultimatum, which expired without any apology. The deadline was conveyed during a year-end event organised by Selangor Umno Youth at Yeo’s service centre.

“This decision reflects a firm political position by Puchong Umno at the parliamentary level as well as the Seri Serdang and Seri Kembangan state constituency levels to cease all cooperation with Puchong Harapan,” Yusof said in a statement.

He stressed that the move was intended as a protest and a means of safeguarding the party’s principles and dignity, and would not affect cooperation at the national level unless directed by Umno or Barisan Nasional (BN) central leadership.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Puchong Umno Youth chief Khairul Azmil Bashir Mohamed had earlier submitted a memorandum to Yeo’s office, warning that his wing would sever ties with the local DAP division if no apology was issued.

Yusof said the termination means Puchong Umno will no longer hold joint meetings, coordinate programmes, or collaborate with Puchong Harapan in election-related activities. The division will also take independent positions on local issues moving forward.

He reiterated that the decision does not signal Umno’s withdrawal from the unity government at either the state or national level, as long as it remains consistent with resolutions by the Umno Supreme Council and BN central leadership.

Yusof also noted that the Puchong Umno division, led by former Seri Serdang assemblyman Satim Diman, is unlikely to support any Harapan candidate in the Puchong parliamentary seat.
