Tan Sri Muhyiddin Resigns As Perikatan Nasional Chairman Effective Jan 1

Date:

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has officially confirmed his resignation as chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), effective Jan 1.

“I thank the PN leadership for their support during my five years leading the coalition,” he said. “I wish the PN leadership and all component parties the very best in their future endeavours.”

Muhyiddin’s statement did not mention his role as Bersatu president. Sources have confirmed that he is stepping down only as PN chairman but will continue to serve as Bersatu president.

His resignation comes amid rising tensions between Bersatu and Pas following the recent political crisis in Perlis, which resulted in Bersatu taking over the Menteri Besar post from Pas.

The crisis unfolded after five Bersatu and three Pas assemblymen withdrew their support for former MB Mohd Shukri Ramli, who later resigned citing health reasons. Subsequently, Pas sacked the three assemblymen, and their seats were declared vacant. The party also requested Bersatu to take action against its five assemblymen.

The appointment of Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah as the new Perlis Menteri Besar drew criticism from several Pas leaders, with one even urging the party to sever ties with Bersatu.
