The passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali has prompted an outpouring of condolences from Malaysians across the country, including political figures, members of the royal families, celebrities and members of the public.
Emotions ran high online after footage emerged showing her husband, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, leaving the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur following her passing.
In footage shared on Threads, Siti Hasmah’s remains were seen being accompanied by their son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, before being placed into a hearse.
Mahathir was also seen inside a vehicle as he left IJN, wearing an oxygen support device.
The footage prompted an emotional response from netizens, with many expressing sadness at seeing Mahathir following the loss of his wife of around seven decades.
Some described the moment as particularly heartbreaking, noting the length of their marriage and the loss of a lifelong companion.
Siti Hasmah passed away at IJN this morning at the age of 100. She is survived by seven children.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Siti Hasmah will be accorded the Istiadat Pengebumian Pembesar Negara.
