9,000 Chickens Killed After Fire Guts Poultry Farm in Juru

Date:

A late-night fire at a poultry farm in Juru, Simpang Ampat, killed about 9,000 chickens after a chicken coop was partially destroyed.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at 10.39pm last night reporting a blaze at CAB Cakaran Breeding Farm Sdn Bhd along Jalan Juru Estate.

“The fire involved a chicken coop and caused an estimated 50 per cent damage to the internal structure, including the poultry rearing area. As a result, approximately 9,000 chickens were found dead,” he said in a statement today.

Fire engines from the Prai Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from personnel from Bandar Perda, arrived at the scene at about 11.01pm. By then, volunteer fire brigades in the area had already brought the fire largely under control.

John said the blaze was contained within the coop and did not spread to nearby structures. Firefighters conducted checks while wearing full personal protective equipment and ensured the fire was fully extinguished, with no further risks detected.

The operation was brought under control at 11.05pm and concluded at 11.58pm. No injuries were reported.

The incident has been handed over to the fire investigation officer to determine the cause of the fire.
