Sahruddin Jamal Resigns as Johor PN Chief Following Muhyiddin’s Exit

Date:

Bersatu’s Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal has resigned as Johor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, citing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision to step down as the coalition’s top leader.

The Bukit Kepong assemblyman said his appointment to the post was made by Muhyiddin, and he felt it was appropriate to relinquish the role following the former prime minister’s resignation.

“Muhyiddin appointed me. Since he has resigned, I have also decided to step down,” said Sahruddin, a former Johor menteri besar, when contacted.

He added that after losing the menteri besar position, he had no objection to giving up the Johor PN chairmanship as well.

Sahruddin said the Muafakat Nasional (MN) leadership could now move to appoint a new Johor PN chairman, a remark believed to be linked to renewed efforts to revive the MN alliance between PAS and Umno. PAS election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has been among those advocating a revival of the pact.

Despite his resignation, Sahruddin stressed that Johor PN remains stable and that his decision was not due to internal problems within the state coalition.

“Johor PN is in good shape. We held a meeting two weeks ago and everything was fine. My resignation has nothing to do with Johor PN,” he said.

He expressed hope that the next Johor PN chairman would be able to strengthen the coalition’s performance in the state, where Bersatu currently holds two seats and PAS one.

Earlier, Muhyiddin confirmed he will step down as PN chairman effective Jan 1, thanking coalition leaders for their support over his five-year tenure. His resignation comes amid growing tensions between Bersatu and PAS, particularly following the Perlis political developments that saw Bersatu take over the menteri besar post from PAS.
