Over 100 Homes Flooded in Kuching After Overnight Downpour

Date:

Heavy rain since midnight has caused flooding in several low-lying areas on the outskirts of Kuching, Sarawak, with water beginning to enter homes as early as 1.30am.

The situation worsened as the downpour continued into the morning, affecting residential areas in Batu Kawa, including Taman Desa Wira and Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Harian Metro reported.

By 6.30am, about 100 houses in the area were inundated. Many residents were unable to salvage their belongings due to the swift rise in floodwaters.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre (PGO) said they received a distress call at 5.08am.

“Teams from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station were immediately deployed to the affected locations. Several residents requested assistance to be relocated to safer areas after their homes were flooded,” the spokesperson said.

The total number of evacuees has yet to be confirmed.
