Education Ministry to Study Reinstating UPSR and PT3 Exams

Date:

The Education Ministry has requested time to conduct a comprehensive study regarding the proposal to reinstate the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) examinations.

Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the study will carefully evaluate the implementation of the assessments, which had been replaced in recent years, and their impact on students’ holistic development.

“We are asking for some time because this study is ongoing. I have already given the mandate to the National Education Advisory Council. At the ministry level, we have some initial views, but a thorough study will be conducted before presenting it to the cabinet for further consideration,” she said.

Fadhlina made the remarks while visiting Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Ladang Regent, Elmina, on the first day of the 2026/2027 academic year. Her deputy, Wong Kah Woh, was also present.

The study will also take into account parental feedback and requests, as well as review the effectiveness of the current School-Based Assessment system. Fadhlina expects the study to be completed this year and submitted to the cabinet as soon as possible.

Last week, Fadhlina noted that the ministry had reactivated the Council to examine the need for UPSR and PT3 following continued calls from parents. The UPSR was abolished in 2021, and the PT3 in 2022, with both replaced by school-based assessments.
