UMNO Youth Chief Akmal: “I Don’t Attack, I Only Defend”

Date:

UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has stressed that he has never launched attacks against others, but merely defends his stance and represents grassroots voices, which he believes should not be ignored.

Dr Akmal said the issues that have arisen were first raised by others, and he only responded in defense.

“If you look at matters like stockings or the halal logo, I did not make the first statement. I only defended what was already stated. That is why I said, if I were aggressive, I would attack—but I never do. I only defend. That is who I am,” he told reporters after attending a mediation session in the defamation case filed by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok at the Ayer Keroh Court on Monday.

He previously announced that his position within the party and government will be revealed during the UMNO 2025 Annual General Assembly (PAU 2025) scheduled this week. In a Facebook post, Dr Akmal said the announcement will follow consultations with party branches and divisions to bring the voice of the grassroots to the annual assembly.

Commenting further, Dr Akmal said he will meet Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and later UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to discuss his status.

“At this stage, there will be further discussions. Today, I will meet the Chief Minister, and I also plan to meet the President to discuss PAU. Perhaps then I will state my intentions. If agreed, God willing, the announcement will be made during my opening speech at PAU this Thursday,” he said.

When asked if he would submit a formal resignation letter, Dr Akmal said it depends on the outcome of the discussions, emphasizing that his priority is ensuring the voice of grassroots members is represented at the highest level.

“As a leader, the voices of sub-leaders and grassroots members must be elevated. I hope their voices are not ignored. I respect the authority of the Melaka Chief Minister in determining EXCO appointments, as well as the authority of the UMNO President as party leader. I must seek their views and approval before making any announcement at PAU,” he added.

Dr Akmal also expressed gratitude for the feedback and advice he has received from various parties: “I thank everyone who met me, called, or sent messages to share their opinions. I value all the views given and believe they all have merit for my consideration.”
