The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several areas in Sarawak and Sabah due to expected heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning activity.
In Sarawak, the affected districts include Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah (Tanjung Manis, Daro, Matu, and Dalat), Kapit (Song, Kapit, and Bukit Mabong), Bintulu (Tatau), and Miri (Beluru). In Sabah, the warning covers interior regions such as Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort, Nabawan, Keningau, and Tambunan, as well as the West Coast and Kudat (Kota Marudu and Kudat).
The alert is in effect until 7:00pm on Tuesday, 13 January 2026.
MetMalaysia explained that the warning is issued when thunderstorms are expected to produce rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour and are likely to persist for one hour or more. Thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts and are valid for up to six hours from the time of issue.
Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution, avoid outdoor activities during storms, and stay updated with the latest weather information.
