Abang Johari Says Next Leader Must Be Trained, Trustworthy, Sincere

Date:

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has said that his successor must possess strong character, high integrity, and a sincere commitment to serving the people.

He emphasised that the state’s highest leadership position is not determined by any individual or political party, but rests entirely with the will of the people.

“The people must judge a candidate’s potential for this role, as it is a position of immense trust. Our actions today will be judged tomorrow,” he said during the Premier’s Townhall: 9 Years with the Premier of Sarawak held last night.

Abang Johari made the remarks in response to a question from an audience member regarding his potential successor. Drawing on over four decades in politics, he stressed that integrity is the most essential element of leadership, as any abuse of power or misjudgment could significantly impact the state’s future.

He added that Sarawak requires leaders who understand the realities of its multi-ethnic and multi-religious society and who can maintain harmony and peace while guiding the state’s development.

Abang Johari also highlighted the importance of grooming the younger generation of leaders, ensuring they are genuinely prepared to take on great responsibility rather than rushing to pursue the Premier’s office.

“A leader must be trained. I am thankful that I was trained by the leaders before me, including Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub and Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud. The time will come when I will say ‘bye-bye’… It will then be up to the next generation to develop Sarawak with a new approach,” he said.
