Malaysia has once again emerged as Southeast Asia’s top travel destination, beating Thailand for the second consecutive year and signalling a shift in the region’s tourism landscape.
In the first 11 months of 2025, Malaysia recorded 38.3 million international arrivals, already surpassing its total visitor numbers for all of 2024. By comparison, Thailand welcomed 32.9 million tourists in 2025, with arrivals falling 7% year-on-year, according to Bloomberg.
Simply put, Malaysia’s tourism is accelerating — while Thailand’s momentum is slowing.
Why Thailand Lost Its Lead
Thailand, long regarded as the region’s tourism heavyweight, faced a challenging year as several incidents affected traveller confidence. These included reported kidnapping cases involving tourists, a deadly earthquake, border tensions with Cambodia, and severe flooding in popular destinations. Together, these disruptions pushed many travellers to look elsewhere.
Why Tourists Are Choosing Malaysia
Malaysia’s rise has been driven by a mix of traveller-friendly policies and improved infrastructure.
A key factor is Malaysia’s visa-free entry for Chinese tourists, which has been extended for another five years, with the option for a further extension. Introduced in December 2023 and currently valid until 2026, the policy makes Malaysia far more accessible to one of the world’s largest outbound travel markets.
At the same time, Malaysia has strengthened international flight connectivity, offering more direct routes into the country, while major upgrades at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 have improved capacity and the overall passenger experience.
For many travellers, a smoother airport journey can make or break a destination — and Malaysia appears to be getting it right.

With simplified entry rules, better flight access, and continued investment in tourism infrastructure, Malaysia is heading into 2026 as Southeast Asia’s most visited country.
