Selangor Islamic Authority Cracks Down After Women Wear Leggings with Traditional Dress During Aerobics

Date:

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has launched an investigation into an incident where women wore traditional Malay attire paired with tight leggings during an aerobics session, and has vowed to take legal action if necessary.

JAIS highlighted in a Facebook post yesterday that the incident had drawn significant attention from authorities. The department described the behavior as “undignified” and said it could constitute public misconduct, potentially harming the image of Islam.

The statement added that authorities are currently investigating the venue, event organizers, and all individuals involved. JAIS has urged anyone with information to cooperate with the investigation or contact its hotline at 1800-88-2424.

The incident occurred in Batu 8, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, where two women reportedly participated in an aerobics activity while wearing baju kurung, the traditional Malay outfit, but not adhering to conventional dress standards. One woman reportedly wore a school uniform top with leggings, while the other appeared to be in shorts, with the session themed “Back to School.” The activity sparked public outrage and was reported to authorities.

Police have opened a file on the case and are investigating under Section 504 of the Penal Code (intentional insult and disturbance of public peace), Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
